Among diverse activities of OSP organised in a calendar year, the most prominent one is the Utkal Diwas celebration, the Odisha state foundation day. On the evening of 1st April every year, it marks the commemoration of dedicated efforts and remembrance of the great souls of Odisha who have sacrificed their lives and comfort for the cause of creating a separate independent state. Prominent Odias who have carved a niche for themselves in different fields, i.e. arts, science, entertainment industry, music, literature, public service and administration are invited on the occasion to deliver lectures. The next segment of the celebration boasts of vivid cultural programmes reflecting diversity of Odia culture, society and tradition drawing audience from whole JNU community as well as from outside campus including alumni and Odia people living in New Delhi. It comprises different dance forms of Odisha (Odishi, Sambalpuri, Chhau & Gotipua etc.), contemporary dances, music, instrumental fusion, vocals, mono acts, mimicry and drama. People coming with family & friends on this occasion also relish the exquisite Odia cuisines served in dinner. This fun-festive-food filled occasion is one of the most sought after state cultural events of the whole University appreciated by both students and teaching fraternity.

On the occasion of Utkal Diwas, members also get awarded with certificate and trophy for their winning performances in different competitions organised by OSP during the month of March. The competitions cover sports (including cricket, badminton, carrom, chess and table tennis), amusement (music chair, antakshari, jhoti, rangoli and mehendi) and academic (debate, essay writing and quiz) activities in which members voluntarily organise and participate as well to manifest their creative potential.

When new Odia students enter JNU after getting selected to different courses with new hopes and aspirations, OSP welcomes them as new family members. We organise Fresher’s Welcome Party in the month of August or September every year during the Monsoon Semester of JNU academic calendar. The new students get a chance to know and befriend with others through different activities including dancing, singing and dining together. This occasion of family expansion creates a new bonding between students belonging to different parts of Odisha and very often, germinates the seed of life time friendships.

Keeping in mind the academic temper of the JNU campus, our organisation also organizes different activities including lecture series and seminars inviting experts from different fields to lecture on pressing issues concerning Odisha.

In different situations of need for societal cause, OSP takes active initiative in hosting events in JNU campus to spread awareness among JNU community (e.g. Dengue Awareness Talk & Doctor’s Interaction Session, Blood Donation Camp etc.). During natural calamity caused devastations in Odisha at different times, the organisation has maintained to rise upto the occasion and play its responsible role for the society and distressed people. Members have collected financial and material support from inside JNU and outside and then contributed to the Odisha State Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
